💥 META'S AI CHIP: THE RISE OF A NEW POWER

Meta Platforms has begun testing its first in-house chip for training AI models—a move that feels like the Revenge of the Sith moment in the AI industry. With this, Meta aims to harness the force behind its AI systems on its own terms, reducing dependency on external chip suppliers like Nvidia.

Only a small batch of these custom chips is live in testing now, but if this trial run performs well, Meta plans to ramp up production for wider use across its data centers. The ultimate goal: lower the company’s astronomical infrastructure costs (with AI projects driving as much as $65 billion of next year’s spending) while boosting its AI-powered features and services.

This new chip is a specialized AI accelerator, designed specifically for machine learning tasks, meaning it could run AI models more efficiently than general-purpose graphics processors. If successful, Meta will start using these chips to train the algorithms that decide what you see on Facebook and Instagram – and eventually to power generative AI tools like Meta AI.

Strategically, Meta is striving to take charge of its own AI destiny instead of relying on a third-party tech empire. (Its last attempt at custom silicon flopped, leading to a costly retreat back to Nvidia’s GPUs in 2022, so the stakes are high this time.)

🧞‍♂️ GENIE APIs: TALK TO YOUR DATA, ANYTIME

As part of the Week of AI Agents, Databricks has introduced the Genie Conversation APIs in Public Preview on AWS, Azure, and GCP. These APIs allow users to interact with data using natural language across platforms like Databricks Apps, Slack, Teams, Sharepoint, and custom apps.

With the Conversation APIs, you can programmatically submit natural language prompts to get data insights, just like in the Genie UI. The APIs are stateful, maintaining context for follow-up questions in a conversation.
